Tedi May

Early Days

Tedi grew up in the Ozark Hills near Branson Missouri. Her first memory is dancing to her grandpa playing the fiddle at music parties. She started playing the banjo in high school, and formed a couple bluegrass bands playing the banjo with her mother on upright bass.

Becoming a Musician

After graduating from high school, Tedi practiced about six hours a day for a year on the drums, and became accomplished enough to play professionally around the Midwest in a three-piece 50’s-60’s band called “Young, Loud, and Wrong”. Around that time she married and lived in Kansas City Missouri with Robert Walkenhorst of the “Rainmakers.” “We got a record deal with EMI/ Mercury/Polygram for his band, and traveled a lot around the world promoting records for the Rainmakers. I moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1993 and attended the “Atlanta Institute of Music” earning a degree in string bass, and was the first female to graduate with honors.”

Losing my Voice

“While living in Atlanta, I became ill. I developed a severe vocal illness called “Spasmodic Dysphonia.” I went from being able to speak normally to not having any voice at all in about a three-week period. It was brought on by several factors, mainly stress, overuse, and not knowing how to apply proper breath support for the amount of talking I was doing with  my business. My voice disappeared for three years. I was told by several  medical specialists that I might not ever regain the ability to speak clearly.”

Overcoming Health Challenges

“So, I went on a spiritual journey to figure out why I got so sick, and how to get well. I did get well, and learned a great deal of information about health, breathing, how the voice is produced, how to produce proper breath support for vocal health and longevity, great vocal support exercises I do daily, well-being, and how to be happy regardless of circumstances. I am writing a book with the help of a friend that will outline all I went through, and how I got well. I actually didn’t sing before, and from re-learning to speak with the proper breath support, I learned to sing!”

I love the song you did at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on June 7 2011 with Marideth about the bird flying. What was it called? If only I could have videotaped you two performing the song. It was perfect. Thank you.

    • Tedi May says:

Hi, Lucretia~ I think the song you are referring to is “Fly Away Pretty Bird.”…
My understanding is that Marideth got it from the great singer Hazel Dickens.. Who has passed just recently..
I am so glad you like it. It is on the new record, but I didn’t play in the album..We just worked out the bass part for the tour :)
      Kind regards,

Tedi, every time you and Marideth did that song it was somewhat different and so special. I love what it evolved into. Don’t know if I told you that while on the road, so here it is!

Well, I guess a big “I love you” from your Mom is ok? I’m proud of you and am pissed that they cut you guys off in the middle of your song today on TV.. They shouldn’t do that!!!
Anyway, You’re doing great.. Keep up the good work… I still love Van and “over the mountain”.

    I play the CD everyday…

Your voice is a gift from God as well as all your other musical talents. Thank you SOOOOO much for enriching our lives here at Licking. Last Saturday’s concert was great. People have nothing but great comments on the evening. God bless. Ellen Reynolds

Wow! You look marvelous! What a great band! Your mother tipped me off to where I could find you. I am so glad I did. I would love our son to hear your band. He is 16 and a great musician, and he also loves the Mighty Clouds of Joy!
I live with my family in Arkadelphia, AR. My husband is a pastor of a non-denominational church, and I teach at Henderson State University. I received my Ph.D. from Texas Tech. We are an hour south of Little Rock. Do you every get down this way.

What a story you have lived. Would love to hear more. I kept seeing Bo’s FB post on the bands
tour, but I had no idea you were a part of the band! Now I know why the band is award winning.
